আমাদের গ্রাম চহঠা বরিশালের কালেক্টরেট থেকে উত্তর-পশ্চিম দিকে পাঁচ মাইল দূরে। এই গ্রাম কাশিপুর ইউনিয়নের একটা অংশ। ১৯৩০ ও ১০৪০ দশকে চহঠার প্রায় সমস্ত হিন্দুরা ছিলেন শিক্ষিত ও স্বচ্ছল, এবং মুসলমানরা ছিলেন অশিক্ষিত ও গরিব। আমার বাবা সোনামুদ্দিন মুন্সী সাহেবই ছিলেন সবচাইতে বেশি শিক্ষিত মুসলমান। তিনি তখনকার দিনের প্রাইমারি স্কুল থেকে চতুর্থ শ্রেণী শেষ করেছিলেন । যেহেতু তিনি বই পড়তে পারতেন তাকে রাত্রে বিভিন্ন সমাবেসে বই পড়ে শুনাতে হতো। অনেক সময় তিনি উচ্চশ্বরে সুর দিয়ে মীর মোশারফ হোসেনের “বিষাদ সিন্ধু” বই পড়তেন এবং শ্রোতারা কেঁদে অস্থির হয়ে যেতেন। তারা মনে করতেন যে বিষাদ সিন্ধু যে রাসূলুল্লাহর নাতি হোসাইন সম্বন্ধে ঘটনাগুলো বর্ণনা করেছে তা সবই সত্য।
মুন্সী সাহেব কোরান শরীফ পড়তে পারতেন। শরীয়া সম্বন্ধেও তার বেশ জ্ঞান ছিল। তাই তিনি মসজিদের ইমামতি করতেন, বিয়ে পড়াতেন, মিলাদ পড়তেন, এবং জানাজার নামাজে ইমামতি করতেন। মাঝে মাঝে তিনি বড়ো বড়ো মজলিসে বক্ত্রিতা দিতেন। আমার ক্যানাডার বন্ধুরা বুঝতে পারছেন যে আমার বাবা যা করেছেন বাংলাদেশে আমি তা করতে চেষ্টা করি ক্যানাডায়।
মুন্সী সাহেব ছিলেন একজন সৎ, সত্যবাদী, বিনয়ী এবং পরোপকারী মানুষ। তাই আমাদের গ্রামের হিন্দু, মুসলমান, ছোট বড়ো সমস্ত মানুষ তাকে শ্রদ্ধা করতেন ও ভালোবাসতেন।
আমাদের বাড়ির মোমিন আলী সাহেবের পরিবার ছিল গ্রামের মুসলমানদের ভেতর সবচাইতে স্বচ্ছল। তার ছোট ভাই কাশেম আলী সাহেব ছিলেন অত্যন্ত বুদ্ধিমান। সবার ছোট হাতেম আলী সাহেব ছিলেন একজন কর্মঠ লোক। তাদের বেশ কিছু জমিজমা ছিল। তাদের দৌড়ের গরুও ছিল। বৈশাখী মেলায় তাদের গরু দুটো দৌড় প্রতিযোগিতায় অংশ নিতো। মোমিন আলী সাহেবের বড়ো ছেলে জয়নাল আবেদীন পড়াশুনা করেন। আমার বাবার পরে তিনি গ্রামের সবচাইতে বেশি উচ্চ শিক্ষিত মুসলমান হন। তিনি বি. এম. কলেজ থেকে আই. এস. ছি. (এখনকার এইচ. এস. ছি। ) পাশ করেন। তিনি খুব ভালো চাকরি করতেন। তিনি পূর্ব পাকিস্তানের ফায়্যার সার্ভিসের ডিরেক্টর জেনেরাল ছিলেন।
আবেদীন সাহেব দেখতেও খুব সুন্দর ছিলেন। তার উচ্চ শিক্ষা ও বড়ো চাকরির জন্য দূর দূরান্ত থেকে মানুষ তাকে দেখতে আসতেন। তিনি জখন গ্রামে আসতেন তখন আমরা গ্রামের ছেলেরা কাশিপুর হাই স্কুলের কাছে গিয়ে তাকে অভিনন্দন জানাতাম এবং তার পেছনে মিছিল করে আমাদের গ্রামে ফিরে আসতাম। বাড়ি পৌঁছে তিনি প্রত্যেকটি বাচ্চাকে একটা টফি দিতেন। আমরা টফি পেয়ে খুব খুশি হতাম এবং পরের বছর আবার তার গ্রামে ফিরে আসার জন্য অপেক্ষা করতাম।
পরবর্তীকালে আমি একবার চাচা আবেদীন সাহেবের চট্টগ্রামের বাসায় বেড়াতে গিয়েছিলাম। আমি সেখানে তার গাড়িতে চরে কোথাও গিয়েছিলাম। সেটাই ছিল আমার প্রথম গাড়িতে চরার অভিজ্ঞতা। তখন আমার বয়স ছিল ১৯ বছর।
দরিদ্রতার জন্য আমাদের গ্রামের ছেলেরা ৫/৬ বছর বয়স হলেই তাদের পরিবারকে সাহায্য করার জন্য গরু চরানো এবং মাঠের কৃষিকাজে লিপ্ত হয়ে যেত। আমাদের গ্রামের শোষি সিংহের বাড়িতে প্রাইমারি স্কুল থাকলেও মুসলমান বাবা-মা-রা তাদের ছেলেদেরকে সে স্কুলে পাঠাতেননা। মুন্সী সাহেব এবং আবেদীন সাহেব তখন ঠিক করলেন যে তারা গরিব মুসলমানদের ছেলেদের জন্য একটা স্কুল খোলবেন এবং বাবা-মা-কে বুঝিয়ে বলবেন তাদের ছেলেমেয়েকে সেই স্কুলে পাঠাতে। স্কুল ঘর কোথায় পাবে ? তারা ঠিক করলেন যে আমাদের বাড়ি ও পুব দিকের বাড়ির মাঝখান দিয়ে যে কাঁচা রাস্তাটা গিয়েছে তার উপরই স্কুল বসবে। তাই হলো। আমরা বাচ্চারা রাস্তার দু’পাশে দুই সাড়িতে মুখোমুখি বসতাম। আমাদের সাথে নিয়ে আসতাম একটা পুরানো পাটের বস্তা, তালপাতা, মাটির দোয়াত, দোয়াতে কয়লার গুঁড়া পানিতে গুলে তৈরী করা কালি , এবং বাসের কঞ্চির একদিক শুরু করে কেটে তৈরী করা কলম। আমরা পাটের বস্তার উপর বসে বাসের কঞ্চির কলম দিয়ে তাল পাতার উপর লিখেছি। ফুল-টাইম মাস্টার ছিলেন নোয়াখালীর এক মৌলভি সাহেব। আমার বাবা মুন্সী সাহেবও ক্ষেত খামারের কাজের ফাঁকে এসে প্রত্যেক দিন তিন ঘন্টার মতো পড়াতেন। আমার বাবা এই স্কুলে শিক্ষকতা করতেন স্বেচ্ছাসেবক হিসাবে। মৌলভী সাহেবকে বেতন দিতে হতো। তার বেতন দেয়ার জন্য মুষ্ঠি-ভিক্ষা সংগ্রহ করার আয়োজন করা হলো। প্রত্যেক ঘরে একটা ছোট মাটির হাড়ি রাখা হলো। ভাত রান্না করার আগে মেয়েরা এক মুঠো চাল এই হাড়ির ভেতর ফেলে দিতো। প্রত্যেক সপ্তায় আমরা ছেলেরা বাড়ি বাড়ি গিয়ে মুষ্ঠি-ভিক্ষা সংগ্রহ করে আনতাম। এই ভিক্ষার চাল বিক্রি করে মৌলভী সাহেবের বেতন দেওয়া হতো।
স্কুল শেষে আমরা ছাত্ররা এক সাড়িতে দাঁড়িয়ে উচ্চশ্বরে কোরাস করে নামতা পড়তাম। তার পর দৌড়িয়ে বাড়ি যেতাম। সেখানে সমস্ত জিনিসপত্র রেখে বন্ধুদের সাথে মাঠে চলে যেতাম আরো বেশি করে তালপাতা সংগ্রহ করতে। বাড়ি ফিরে পরের দিনের জন্য কয়লার গুঁড়া দিয়ে কালি বানিয়ে রেখে দিতাম।
এই মুষ্ঠি-ভিক্ষা দিয়ে চালানো কাঁচা রাস্তার উপরের স্কুলের গ্রাজুয়েটরা অনেকে তাদের শিক্ষার জীবনে সফলতা অর্জন করেছে। আবেদীন সাহেবের চাচাতো ভাই আব্দুল আলী এবং আমাদের বাড়ির আব্দুর রাশিদ লেখাপড়া শেষ করে এয়ার ফোর্সে ভালো কাজ করেছেন। আমিও সেই স্কুলে পড়াশুনা করে এসে ক্যানাডার বিখ্যাত ম্যাকগিল বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় থেকে ডক্টরেট ডিগ্রি অর্জন করেছি।
আজ আমাদের গ্রামের অনেক মানুষ শিক্ষিত। আবেদীন সাহেবের নিজের ভাই আবু জাফর বি. এ. পাশ করে ফায়ার সার্ভিসে অফিসারের কাজ করেছে। তার দুজন ভাইয়ের ছেলে মাস্টার্স ডিগ্রি শেষ করেছে, তার চাচাতো ভাইয়ের মেয়েরা একজন ডাক্তার, এবং একজন ব্যারিস্টারি পড়ছে, এবং তার নিজের নাতি জোহুরুল হাসান সোহেল আজ সনামধন্য গীতিকার, সুরকার এবং গায়ক। আমার ছেলে মা সা আল্লাহ দুনিয়ার একজন শ্রেষ্ঠতম কিডনি স্পেশালিস্ট। আমার তিনটা নাতি আমেরিকা ও ক্যানাডার ভালো বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় থেকে ডিগ্রি লাভ করেছে, দু’টো নাতি এখনও বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ে পড়াশুনা করছে, আর নাটনিটা অদূর ভবিষ্যতে তার হাই স্কুল শেষ করবে। আমি যখন আমার মন্ট্রিয়ালের নাতি-নাতনিদের স্কুলে যাই তখন আমার নিজের তাল পাতায় লেখা স্কুলের কথা বেশি বেশি মনে পরে। তাদের স্কুলটা ক্যানাডার সর্বশ্রেষ্ট স্কুলগুলোর ভেতর অন্যতম। সে স্কুলের কিন্ডারগারটেন থেকে ক্লাস ১১ পর্য্যন্ত প্রত্যেকটা ছাত্রছাত্রীর টিউশন ফি বছরে ২০,০০০ (বিশ হাজার) ডলার। তারা তিন জনই একই সময় যখন ওই স্কুলে পড়েছে তখন তার মা-বাবা তাদের জন্য প্রতি বছর ৬০,০০০ (ষাট হাজার) ডলার টিউশন ফি দিয়েছে।
এ সবকিছু সম্ভব হয়েছে মুন্সী সাহেব এবং আবেদীন সাহেবের মুষ্ঠি-ভিক্ষা চালিত স্কুলের জন্য। তারা যে প্রদীপ জ্বালিয়েছিলেন তার আলো এখন চারদিকে ছড়িয়ে পড়েছে। আমরা সবাই তাদের আত্মার শান্তির জন্য আল্লাহর কাছে দোয়া করি।
